Nature’s Sunshine Products, Inc. reported a 6% increase in Q3 2023 net sales compared to the same period in 2022, reaching $111.2 million. Operating income during the quarter increased to $5.8 million, or 5.2% of net sales, up from $5 million in the same period last year.

Adjusted EBITDA in the third quarter was up by 50% to $10.3 million, which the company attributes to its increase in operating income.

“Nature’s Sunshine delivered another strong quarter, with double-digit growth in Asia/Pacific and North America,” said Nature’s Sunshine CEO Terrence Moorehead. “APAC saw strong order growth with a 12% increase in local currency sales, while the North America business continued to respond well to our digital investments and improved field activation, delivering 11% growth for the quarter, the strongest growth in many years. We’re also beginning to see the results of our gross margin initiatives which drove a 150-basis point improvement in gross margin in the third quarter. Since the first quarter of this year, gross margin has improved from 70.8% to 73.1% in the third quarter of 2023. These results demonstrate the strong underlying fundamentals of our business. Our continued above-market growth and aggressive cost initiatives combined to deliver a 50%+ increase in EBITDA in Q3 to $10.3 million. We are excited about our continued progress and the opportunities for further growth and profitability as we move forward.”

The company now expects full year 2023 net sales to range between $443-$451 million with an adjusted EBITDA between $37-$40 million.

A new study is quantifying the direct selling industry’s impact on the economy of Utah, a measurement that has never before been documented. In An Economic Analysis of Utah’s Direct Selling Industry, a 24-page white paper authored by Senior Research Economist Levi Pace for the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah, Pace details 19 months of data collection and surveys.

The driving force behind the study was a collaboration with the Utah Direct Selling Coalition (UDSC), an entity founded through collaborative support of Cloe Nixon and Troy Keller at Dorsey and Whitney LLP and direct selling companies 4Life, ASEA, doTERRA, LifeVantage, Nature’s Sunshine, NewAge, Nu Skin, Modere, USANA Health Sciences, Younique, Young Living and Zyia Active. The resulting third-party analysis of the channel’s economic impact on local economies is expected to become a model for other states densely populated by direct selling companies.

“I speak for all Utah Direct Selling Coalition members by saying that we’ve always known our channel contributes meaningfully to Utah’s economy—but none of us anticipated the depth and breadth of our impact on the state,” said Calvin Jolley, 4Life Vice President of Corporate Communications. “Among more than 150 combined direct sellers and ecosystem service suppliers, we account for more than one-third of Utah’s total international exports, and more than 70% of Utah’s non-gold exports. Our businesses provide more than 38,000 jobs. We employ a more diverse workforce than other industries and bring people in from around the country and world. All this says nothing about our entrepreneurial opportunities or philanthropic commitments. The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute Economic Analysis provides us with an indispensable tool to engage and educate policymakers. And as a collective? The UDSC framework is a model that every state with more than one direct selling company should adopt.”

Key findings in the paper indicate just how vast Utah’s direct selling footprint is, hosting 157 companies who are responsible for 38,238 jobs, or 1.8% of the state’s employment. Direct selling jobs were also found to pay higher than average wages, ranking 18.4% higher than other industries within the state.

The ten direct selling companies surveyed by Pace’s team reported $10.3 billion in sales in 2020 and were responsible for $6.3 billion in international exports in 2020, or 35.6% of Utah’s total international exports and 71.7% of Utah’s non-gold commodity exports.

Direct selling’s presence in Utah also catalyzes tourism. From 2015 to 2019, it is estimated that out-of-state visitors attending direct selling conventions spent $41.6 million annually.

In 1972, Gene and Kristine Hughes launched the idea for Nature’s Sunshine with a simple idea of putting the healing power of herbs into capsule form. Today, that home-spun family business has become a multimillion-dollar global enterprise with a presence in more than 40 countries worldwide.

Maintaining its mantra of “created from nature and rooted in science,” the company is committed to sourcing pure and potent ingredients, and then systematically running more than 600 tests to ensure that each formulation will be effective and safe.

The company’s product portfolio now includes more than a dozen categories, addressing customer needs for weight management, digestion, sleep improvement, energy and more.

Nurturing people and the planet has become an integral part of the company’s DNA over the last five decades. In its first sustainability report released earlier this month, the company detailed its investments in sustainable energy practices, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and waste, and embracing a diverse global workforce. This commitment is a high priority in the company’s vision for the future.

“Sustainability and transparency will be at the forefront of our company’s next 50 years,” said Trent McCausland, Nature’s Sunshine Vice President of Sustainability and Transparency.

Nature’s Sunshine reported its fourth quarter and full year financial results for 2021. The company’s net sales in the fourth quarter rose 15.9% over the previous year’s quarter to $117.9 million, the sixth consecutive quarter of record net sales for the company. These record quarters culminated in a company record for annual net sales of $444.1 million in 2021.

Adjusted EBITDA in the fourth quarter increased 54.7% to $11.6 million, while the full year adjusted EBITDA increased 36.6% year-over-year to $49.4 million.

“2021 was another record-breaking year for Nature’s Sunshine, as net sales and adjusted EBITDA reached historic highs,” said Terrence Moorehead, CEO of Nature’s Sunshine. “This was our sixth consecutive quarter of historic record-breaking growth, driven by effective implementation of our five global growth strategies. Importantly, 2021 was our first full-year implementing the new strategies, and while they have clearly revitalized the business, it’s still early and we believe we’re on the front-end of the growth curve. Overall, we’re ahead of schedule and delivering strong results across all our operating geographies and channels.”

The fourth quarter experienced higher costs in service fees in China and direct selling costs associated with increased sales. Those impacts, along with sales growth initiatives in some markets, led to an increase in selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses in the fourth quarter of 2021, totaling $45.4 million. These SG&A expenses, as a percentage of net sales, were 38.2% in the fourth quarter, compared to 37.1% in the same quarter of 2020. SG&A expenses in 2021 were $154.1 million, up from $131.3 million in 2020. As a percentage of net sales, these SG&A costs were 34.7%.

The company attributes its record net sales in 2021 to its continued business transformation initiatives, the launch of new products and the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in key markets. Gross margin for the company in 2021 increased 30 basis points to 74%, a slight increase over 2020.

Net cash provided by operating activities was slightly down from 2020, ending the year at $34.6 million. The company also repurchased 439,000 shares at a total cost of $7.4 million. Cash and cash equivalents in 2021 were $86.2 million with an outstanding debt of $2.4 million.

“Looking forward to 2022, we continue to invest in our digital, personalization, and manufacturing capabilities to improve the customer experience and will strengthen our branding to drive customer growth,” Moorehead said. “We believe an intensified focus on our five global growth strategies will continue to move our business in the right direction and help us gain traction, over time. Our global strategies are an important aspect of our capital allocation plan and we will continue to invest ahead of growth to accelerate market penetration.”
